Angle Diffusion Due to Electron - Whistler Interactions during Disturbed Times

چکیده
During periods of increased magnetospheric activity , whistler wave emissions have been observed with increased wave amplitudes. We consider a pitch angle diffusion mechanism that is shown to scale with whistler wave amplitude and hence is 'switched on' during these periods of intense activity. We consider the interaction between relativistic electrons and two oppositely directed, parallel propagating whistler mode waves. We show that for intense whistlers this process is stochastic and results in strong electron pitch angle diffusion. We show that the interaction is rapid, occur on timescales of the order of tens of electron gyrope-riods and that the interaction is sensitive to wave amplitude, wave frequency and electron energy.

Enhanced Phase Space Diffusion due to Chaos in Relativistic Electron - Whistler Mode Wave Particle Interactions with Applications
Using numerical solutions of single particle dynamics, we consider a chaotic electron-whistler interaction mechanism for enhanced diffusion in phase space. This process, when applied to parameters consistent with the Jovian magnetosphere, is a candidate mechanism for pitch angle scattering in the Io torus, thus providing a source of auroral precipitating electrons. We initially consider the int...

The chaotic interaction between electrons and whistler mode waves has been shown to provide a mechanism for enhanced diffusion in phase space. Pitch angle diffusion is relevant for the scattering of electrons into the loss cones, thus providing a source for auroral precipitating electrons. A single whistler mode wave propagating parallel to the background magnetic field has resonance with the e...
متن کاملA Model for Generating Relativistic Electrons in the Earth’s Inner Magnetosphere Based on Gyroresonant Wave-particle Interactions
During the recovery phase of a magnetic storm, fluxes of relativistic (> 1 MeV) electrons in the inner magnetosphere (3 ≤ L ≤ 6) increase to beyond pre-storm levels, reaching a peak about 4 days after the initiation of the storm. In order to account for the generation of these “killer electrons”, a model is presented primarily based on stochastic acceleration of electrons by enhanced whistler-m...

[1] A quantitative analysis is presented of the resonant scattering of plasma sheet electrons ( 100 eV–20 keV) at L = 6 due to resonant interactions with whistler-mode chorus. Using wave parameters modeled from observations under geomagnetically disturbed conditions, it is demonstrated that the rate of pitch angle scattering can exceed the level of strong diffusion over a broad energy range (20...

[1] Using statistical wave power spectral profiles obtained from CRRES and the latitudinal distributions of wave propagation modeled by the HOTRAY code, a quantitative analysis has been performed on the scattering of plasma sheet electrons into the diffuse auroral zone by multiband electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) emissions near L = 6 within the 0000–0600 MLT sector. The results ...
